In 1912 the Marine Board (now the Port of Launceston Authority) engaged Mr Henry Hunter, Chief Engineer of the Manchester Ship Canal Company, to report fully on the development on the River Tamar. Hunter declared, “Bell Bay will be an inland port unexcelled in the world”. In 1950 that both the Vacuum Oil Company and the AAC (now Comalco) began their installations. Next came the announcement by the Broken Hill Company that one of its subsidiaries, TEMCO, would begin operations at Bell Bay.

Bell Bay is the industrial heart of Northern Tasmania.  The Tasmanian Electro Metallurgical Company (known as TEMCO) runs tours of its facility, the only Australian ferro alloy producing plant.
