A market town north of Hobart, Bridgewater is the location of the main north-south crossing of the River Derwent - originally known as Green Point. The Causeway was constructed in the early 1830s by 200 convicts who, in chains, over a period of years wheelbarrowed 2 million tons of stone and clay.

The first bridge was opened in 1849, replacing a punt that was used to bridge the gap. The present structure dates from 1946.
