The municipal and principal commercial centre of King Island was named after Captain Archibald Currie, one of Victoria’s leading citizens in the late 1800s. He used what is now known as Currie Harbour while salvaging the wreck of the ship ‘Netherby’.
Currie is situated on the west coast of this rugged Island. It offers the visitor all the service facilities required and has a population of approximately 700 people.
A modern Hospital and District School serve the community. Other facilities include motels, licensed restaurants, cafes and two licensed clubs, golf course, netball, tennis courts, a bowling green and the recently established Cultural Centre.
