Devonport & surrounds
For many visitors the North West will provide the first experience of Tasmania. The three Spirit of Tasmania ferries, depart from either Melbourne or Sydney - but they all arrive at Devonport. The North West also contains two airports: Devonport and Burnie (Wynyard).
If you have arrived aboard ship and docked at Devonport make sure you don’t head south before you see all that Devonport has to offer. Follow the signs to Devonport, drive over the bridge and enjoy this delightful seaside centre.
Once you do leave Devonport, heading south will take you past the town of Latrobe, which claims to be the “Platypus Capital of the World” and also has a good selection of other attractions, cafes and antique stores. Deloraine is the gateway to the Great Western Tiers and features some interesting colonial buildings and quiet picnic spots near the beautiful Meander River. As you approach Launceston you can visit Westbury, a quiet town with a number of interesting spots including Pearns Steam World, full of vintage machinery and a number of tranquil parks.
