The original name was Port Esperance, named after one of the ships of French Admiral Bruny D’Entrecasteaux in 1792. This name was given to the bay, and the three islands in the bay are Faith, Hope and Charity. There are several old graves on Faith Island.

From the late 1850s several large sawmills were built in the Dover area with a big output of first class timber. The main industries today are Atlantic salmon fish farms, fruit growing and fishing.

Dover is a popular tourist resort which offers safe beaches and sheltered water for yachts, boat ramps, a caravan park, supermarkets and it has a wide range of good accommodation.

Visit Dover’s ‘old school’ for visitor information where there is a Gallery and gift shop.
