Hellyer Gorge

A scenic reserve on the Waratah Highway linking the north-west and west coasts (picnic and rest area). A mountainous and heavily forested area, it is one of the most impressive sections of highway in Tasmania. Since the opening of the Guildford/Hampshire road, heavy vehicles leave the Hellyer Gorge to the more leisurely motorist, making it even more popular as a picnic area.
A number of walking tracks along the banks of the Hellyer River (near the rest area) provide a pleasant walk to refresh before journeying on.
