Orford is situated on the Prosser River.
It was an important port when the east coast’s main means of transport was by sea. Today it is a popular holiday resort and fishing town. Following the establishment of a convict settlement on Maria Island in 1825, a shore station was established at Orford to serve the local garrison and whalers.

There are many excellent walks. The 2 km track from Shelley Beach around Luther Point goes to Spring Beach where sandstone from the quarry was used for buildings in Hobart and Melbourne. The Wielangta State Forest, including the Wielangta and Rainforest Walks and the Sandpit Forest Reserve is along the Wielangta Road Forest Drive South of Orford. ‘The Old Convict Road’ is a genuine convict road which is a delightful 40 minute return walk along the northern banks of the Prosser River. The two hour return walk from the picnic area on the Three Thumbs provides magnificent views up and down the coast and to Maria Island. The Sandspit River Conservation Area and Rheban Beach are 10 km south.
