Home of the famous Plenty Salmon Ponds, where the first brown and rainbow trout in the southern hemisphere were successfully raised in 1864.
The Salmon Ponds have now been developed as a visitor attraction. A licensed restaurant opens daily at the Salmon Ponds. Trout ranging in size from fingerlings to mature specimens of three to four kilos, live in the outdoor ponds. Atlantic Salmon were re-introduced in 1986 and are thriving, thanks to modern farming techniques. A piscatorial museum has been established.
