Railton is the ‘Town of Topiary’. There are over 100 individual topiaries in various stages of growth including Cradle Mountain National Paddock behind Looking Glass Cottage "Fibre Optic Magic". Collect a free walking guide to the topiaries in town from any shop in the main street as you browse through antique and collectible shops, the magical display of fibre optic lighting and the local Arts and Crafts shop,or enjoy real country fare in the tearooms in town.

Railton is the home of Cement Australia, historically Goliath Portland Cement - one of Tasmania’s major industries.

There are many fascinating walks in and around Railton including Syke’s Sanctuary Park with marble monuments, Stoodley Plantation Forest Walk and part of the Tasmanian Trail.

Targa in Railton

The annual iconic Targa Tasmania passes through Railton for what is rapidly becoming one of the modern institutions of this international event.

Railton is better known as the Town of Topiary but for Targa its double-width main street is turned into a grid for some of the rarest and most iconic motoring marques the world has seen as 150 cars race around Tasmania.

Railton’s historic main street was made double-width so pioneer settlers could turn a bullock team in one turn but in modern times it makes the perfect venue for the extraordinary spectacle as the Targa train rolls in from the southern end and fills the valley with the sounds of roaring engines and cheering fans. “Targa Lounges’’ enable spectators to view the cars from the comfort of chairs and tables where they can sample local produce as they watch the cars arrive. The competitors are stationary in Railton for the lunch period, enabling spectators to get up close and personal with some of the motoring industry’s greatest marques, and the drivers and navigators themselves.
