This was the location of two outstations of the Port Arthur Penal Settlement. An agricultural station was established here and 6 km beyond this township was the important Sloping Main coal mine.

The mine was opened for the purpose of punishing the most refractory convicts, thereby acting as a deterrent to others and at the same time producing fuel for use in the colony. The mine became a ‘hell on earth’ and was dreaded by all. Cells were built in the mine galleries. Opened in 1833, leased in 1848 and abandoned in 1862, the mines caught fire and smouldered for many years. Several important ruins remain.

The Lime Bay State Reserve is located 6km from the Coal Mine site along unsealed roads.
