This township is situated on the Cam River at the junction of the Bass Highway and Murchison Highway to the west coast.

Somerset has become a satellite town of Burnie, 6 km to the east, with extensive residential and light industrial development. This includes timber and plywood mills and industrial machinery.

The local Caravan Park includes a nursery, gallery and café and there are several BBQ and picnic spots along the river and beach.
