Discovered by Admiral Bruny D’Entrecasteaux and named by him ‘Baie des Moules’. This was translated by English geographers as Mussel Bay, although it has been known as Southport since early settlement. On some old maps this appears as Hythe, as the post office bore this name.
The oldest town in the Huon area, Southport is primarily a seaside resort area with some farming and fishing activity.
On the bluff between Southport and Southport Lagoon is a memorial to an 1835 shipwreck when 35 lives were lost. There is a convict burial ground located on Rossel Point. Caravan sites are available at the tavern.
