The Tasmanians

There are now about 478,000 people in Tasmania at any time, including visitors. Unlike the mainland states, there is a healthy percentage of the population (30%) that live in small towns of less than 2000 inhabitants.

About 220,000 people live in the greater Hobart region, about 100,000 in and around Launceston and about 78,000 in the Devonport - Ulverstone - Burnie area.

In general terms Tasmanians are friendly and are definitely eager that you should enjoy the best of the state. They will be pleased to give advice on the best local attractions and some lesser-known places as well.
